ArtGemini Prize invites artists for 2014 cycle

The ArtGemini Prize launched its second round 15 May 2014 during the 20-21 International Fair at the Royal College of Art.

Artists have up to early September 2014 to submit their entries to compete for awards in four categories to a total of GBP 5,500, up from GBP 5,000 in the first round in 2013.

Selected artists will also have the opportunity to sell their works in London, with the proceeds including a contribution to this year’s selected charity, Kidscape.

The ArtGemini Prize says it aims —

  • to promote creativity and excellence from around the world
  • to exhibit a wide range of challenging works
  • to help artists to exhibit and sell their works in London
  • to give the public access to quality and exciting works at affordable prices
  • to support a selected charity with a cash donation each year.

Prize categories

The winners will be announced by the judges at a finalists’ exhibition in London. A cash fund of GBP 5500 will be awarded to the winners in four categories. The Public Choice Prize is open for voting by the public during the exhibition, and the winner will be announced at the close of the show.

Painting and Sculpture Prize: First prize GBP 2000, second prize £1000

Photography Prize: First Prize GBP 1000; Second Prize GBP500

Young Artist Prize (under 25 years): GBP 500

Public Choice Prize: GBP500
A judges’ panel includes Sajid Rizvi (London): Chair, ArtGemini Prize selection committee and judges’ panel, Founder Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, EAPGroup International Media; Zoe Whishaw: Commercial photography consultant, mentor and previously European Director of Photography at Getty Images; Viv Lawes: Senior UK art consultant to One East Asia, lecturer and writer; Dr Phil Shaw: Doctorate in printmaking and renowned artist to the 2013 G8 Summit.

“The judges are looking for excellence in content, contemporary aesthetic, technique and material,” ArtGemini Prize said while launching the new round.

The competition has a two-stage selection process.

Stage 1 (online) The jury will draw up a long list of up to 120 works from all the images submitted online. It will then shortlist up to 40 works for the finalists’ exhibition in London. The judges will have access to information such as title, size and medium but not the identity of the artist. An artist’s signature which is part of the work is permitted.

Stage 2 (final selection) The judges will view each shortlisted work individually and will select the prize winners (except for the Public Choice Prize, which will be based on voting by the public). All selected artists will be advised of the transportation options available for delivery and collection of their works.
