African Christian art

Academics and other researchers have been invited to submit abstracts for papers on African Christian art for presentation at the 16th Triennial Symposium of African Art – African
Christian Art.

A panel titled African Christian Arts: New Fields Opening (Convener: Dr Nicholas J Bridger, Department of Art, Ohlone College, Fremont, CA) will be organised as part of the  the Kevin Carroll Conference on African Christian Art, with Prof. Rowland Abiodun, Amherst College, MA, as discussant.

While Africa’s Christian demographic has exploded during the 20th century, little notice has been taken of this tectonic cultural shift, including that in the arts, writes Bridger in a notice carried on the Humanities network. “Following a recent ground-breaking Kevin Carroll Conference on African Christian Art (2012) in Europe, new research by art scholars from across the continent is beginning to surface. This panel continues the opening up of the study of the Christian art of African peoples, especially of the process by which art is adapted to local cultures (indigenization or inculturation), and invites papers concerning areas or topics whose religious art is little known or studied.”

Potential contributors are invited to submit a title and paper abstract (250-300 words to Nicholas Bridger at njbridger–at–gmail.com by September 10, 2013.

The 16th Triennial Symposium on African Art, organized by the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA), will be held March 19 – 22, 2014.

The venue for the 2014 ACASA Triennial Symposium is now the Brooklyn Museum and the conference hotel is the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott. The Newark Museum will host Museum Day.
